Jewish Organizations Criticize Trump Over Elon Musk’s Actions

A broad coalition of Jewish organizations, including both reformist and conservative Jewish groups, condemned U.S. President Donald Trump over his actions concerning democracy and his use of immigrants and transgender individuals as “scapegoats.” The organizations stated that his empowering of Elon Musk “to impose ideological conformity” threatens the “democratic standards” of the country.
The open letter, which was issued on Friday, was signed by more than 100 organizations representing many branches, movements, and Jewish missions, according to the U.S. news site Axios.
This letter is, according to German News Agency, the latest criticism of Trump from religious organizations regarding his immigration policies and budget cuts.
The Jewish organizations stated that Trump’s actions to deport large numbers of undocumented immigrants, freeze federal funds, and dismantle international programs “fundamentally threaten the freedoms and safety of all Americans.”
These organizations emphasized that legitimate political debates and disagreements are natural, noting that there are differences among the signatories of the letter. However, they insisted that Trump’s recent actions go far beyond that.
In their letter, the organizations wrote: “What is happening is a direct assault on the very principles upon which our democracy is built, including equal justice under the law, and the protection of civil liberties and basic civil rights.”
The letter was written by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and representatives from two of the major Jewish denominations: the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly of the Conservative Movement.
