Scholz Confirms Germany’s Support for a “Free and Safe” Syria to Al-Shara

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Shara during a phone call that lasted about an hour on Friday to support a “free and safe Syria for all its people,” according to the German Chancellor’s office.

Spokesperson for the Chancellor, Steffen Hebestreit, stated in a press release that Scholz and al-Shara “agreed that it is essential to launch a political process now” that includes “all Syrians and provides rights and protection, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations.”

Scholz also confirmed Berlin’s readiness to support the reconstruction of Syria and congratulated the Syrian people on their success in ending Bashar al-Assad’s rule, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that “the German Chancellor emphasized the continued importance of combating terrorism for security in Syria, the region, and the world.”

Meanwhile, the Syrian Presidency reported today that Scholz confirmed his support for the immediate lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Syria “to help the recovery of the Syrian people and support both the humanitarian and economic tracks.”

The presidency’s statement further mentioned that Scholz expressed his support for President Ahmed al-Shara’s steps “regarding the management of talks to complete Syria’s territorial unity, particularly in the northeastern region.”

The statement also noted that al-Shara discussed with the German Chancellor over the phone the roadmap for Syria’s transitional phase and the formation of an inclusive government.

Scholz and al-Shara agreed on the necessity to “work together to preserve security and stability in Syria, support the Syrian political process, and uphold the country’s unity, independence, and territorial integrity,” the statement said.
