German Official Calls for Negotiations with Taliban to Deport Afghans

The Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, has called for immediate negotiations with the Taliban to organize weekly mass deportation flights to Afghanistan, following a recent car-ramming attack in Munich carried out by an Afghan national.

Speaking to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag on Sunday, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) said that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser should start direct talks with the Taliban as early as Monday to arrange deportation flights. He added, “We need one flight every week.”

On Thursday, a 24-year-old Afghan drove his car into a demonstration by the Verdi labor union in Munich, injuring at least 39 people, some critically. The attack led to the deaths of a mother and her two-year-old daughter on Saturday. Investigators currently believe the crime had an “Islamist” motive.

Söder pointed out that Bavaria alone has about 2,000 Afghans under deportation orders, including around 200 classified as dangerous criminals. He stated, “Afghans who are required to leave must be deported quickly. The issuance of visas for new arrivals should be halted for the foreseeable future… First Aschaffenburg, now Munich: Enough is enough. Germany needs an emergency plan for Afghanistan.”

It is worth noting that another Afghan carried out a stabbing attack in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg in January.

According to authorities, the perpetrator of the Munich attack had been residing legally in Germany.
