Kremlin: Talks with Washington a “Significant Step” Toward a “Peaceful Settlement” in Ukraine

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that talks held between Russian and U.S. delegations in Riyadh on Tuesday represented a “significant step” toward reaching a settlement in the Ukraine war, which is nearing its second anniversary.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “A very important step has been taken toward creating the conditions for a peaceful resolution,” adding that “both sides have demonstrated the necessary political will—I mean Russia and the United States,” according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
In parallel with the comprehensive Russian-American negotiations in Riyadh, the Kremlin has begun outlining potential scenarios for any future negotiations on a final settlement in Ukraine.
Despite Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s announcement that both Russian and U.S. delegations agreed on a joint mechanism to initiate a political process, initial discussions indicated that Moscow and Washington would form separate working groups to address the Ukraine issue.
