Lavrov Praises Trump’s Statements on Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for attributing the Ukraine conflict to Western efforts to integrate Kyiv into NATO.

Speaking before lawmakers in the Russian State Duma, Lavrov stated: “He is the first Western leader so far, and in my view, the only Western leader, to publicly and loudly say that one of the deep-rooted causes of the Ukrainian situation was the previous [U.S.] administration’s insistence on dragging Ukraine into NATO.”

Trump recently stated that he has grown more “confident” in the possibility of reaching an agreement with Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. He also strongly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and hinted at a “possible” meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the end of the month.

During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump described recent talks in Riyadh as “very good.” He further explained that after these discussions, he felt “more confident” about the potential for reaching a deal to end the war. He added, “Russia wants to do something. They want to put an end to the brutal savagery.”

When asked whether he could meet Putin before the end of the month, Trump nodded and replied: “It’s possible.”
