The National Umma Party stated that its Vice President, Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, presented the “National Salvation Project” during the consultative meeting organized by the African Union High-Level Mechanism and IGAD in Addis Ababa from February 19 to 21. The project aims to contain and end the war and the political process, and it represents an unprecedented vision to define the stages, steps, mechanisms, and participants in the political process, ensuring popular mandate and the participation of the Sudanese people in taking control of their affairs.
The party emphasized that the consultations were positive and constructive, with political and civil forces participating, expressing their determination to exert every effort to contain and end the war through a Sudanese vision agreed upon by the civil political forces as quickly as possible. This vision aims to achieve national unity and the dignity of the Sudanese people through an inclusive political process leading to the end of the war and the establishment of peace.
The Umma Party welcomed the African Union’s role and efforts in uniting civil forces to end the war and affirmed that the African Union represents the primary platform to assist Sudanese people in reaching a political solution to the current crisis.
The party stressed the priority of an immediate ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, delivery of humanitarian aid, and the protection of civilians. It emphasized the importance of consultations between the African Union mechanism and political and civil forces to effectively prepare for the political process and the need for integration and coordination between platforms aiming for a negotiated solution to the war in Sudan.
The party also stressed the need to commit to a specific timeline for the consultations and meetings that lead to the start of the political process and its regular convening. This is necessary to achieve peace, end the war, alleviate citizens’ suffering, and ensure Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.
Finally, the party underscored the importance of building trust between Sudanese forces, organizations, and groups, starting with agreeing on a code of honor that everyone must adhere to, and working diligently to create a favorable environment for dialogue by taking practical steps to confront hate speech and preventing the exploitation of legal mechanisms in political disputes.
