UNHCR Decision Raises Concerns Among Sudanese Refugees in Egypt

Sudan Events – Agencies

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Egypt has decided to replace the yellow asylum-seeker cards with white ones for all registered Sudanese asylum seekers.

According to Sudanese refugees, the UNHCR has been summoning all Sudanese asylum seekers registered since the outbreak of war in 2023 and issuing them white cards valid for six months instead of the yellow ones, which had an 18-month validity.

Many asylum seekers fear that this decision will leave them without legal documents in Egypt due to the limited validity period and the difficulty of securing new appointment dates to renew their cards.

Previously, the UNHCR issued white cards to applicants who lacked original identification documents or photo-bearing IDs, while yellow cards were granted to those with verified identity documents.
