U.S. Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Trump’s Request to Dismiss Senior Federal Employee

The U.S. Supreme Court temporarily suspended on Friday a request by Donald Trump to allow him to dismiss a senior official leading a federal agency, marking the first decision by the highest judicial authority on a presidential decree since the Republican president took office, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The Trump administration filed a petition on Sunday—the first in the ongoing legal battle over the administration’s initial decisions—seeking approval to implement Trump’s February 7 order to dismiss Hampton Dellinger from his position as head of a federal agency responsible for protecting whistleblowers among federal employees.

The official challenged the decision, and a lower court ruled to reinstate him under a “temporary protective order” preventing his dismissal, according to several U.S. media outlets.

The Trump administration appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that the protective order constituted an “unprecedented attack on the separation of powers.”

However, in its ruling, the Supreme Court indicated that it may reconsider the request next week when the temporary order expires.

The unsigned Supreme Court decision stated that “the request to lift the order… remains pending until February 26, when the temporary protective order expires.”
