UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, along with allied civilian and armed groups, regarding the signing of a political charter signaling their intent to establish a governing authority in militia-controlled areas.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson on Monday, Guterres warned that this further escalation of the conflict in Sudan risks further fragmenting the country and deepening the crisis.
According to the UN News Center, Guterres emphasized that preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity remains essential for achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict and long-term stability for both the country and the wider region.
The Secretary-General also noted that his personal envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, continues to engage with the warring parties and all relevant stakeholders to advance efforts toward ceasing hostilities, protecting civilians, ensuring humanitarian access, and promoting de-escalation.
