Lieutenant General Engineer Ibrahim Jaber, a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Assistant Commander-in-Chief, chaired on Tuesday a meeting of the High Coordination Committee with the United Nations.
The meeting discussed several topics related to Sudan’s cooperation with international organizations.
Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in a press release that he provided a briefing on Sudan-related matters at the UN Security Council, particularly a new British draft resolution on Sudan focusing on the Jeddah platform and the implementation of its outcomes. He explained that the committee discussed the resolution’s pros and cons and agreed on the necessity of engaging with friendly countries in the Security Council to contain this resolution.
Ambassador Al-Amin added that the meeting heard a report on Sudan’s participation in the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, presented by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice. He noted that discussions in the council often revolve around the protection of civilians and violations they face. He pointed out that the violations committee had submitted a comprehensive report in the previous session documenting crimes committed by the RSF militia against civilians. The committee is expected to present the national plan for civilian protection.
The Sovereignty Council member directed the formation of a specialized team led by the Minister of Interior, including representatives from relevant ministries, to prepare arguments and a strategic response regarding this matter.
The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary also noted that the meeting received a briefing on the Nairobi meeting, sponsored by the Kenyan government, and Sudan’s submission of complaints to the United Nations and other bodies. The discussions also covered the renewal of the expert panel for Resolution 1591, which pertains to the arms embargo on Darfur.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed a briefing on the visit of the UNDP Regional Representative to Sudan and his meetings with various ministries. Lieutenant General Engineer Ibrahim Jaber directed the formation of a small committee to integrate UNDP programs into the country’s reconstruction projects.
