Macron: The EU Plans to Respond Similarly to Any U.S. Tariffs

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that the European Union plans to impose “reciprocal tariffs” on steel and aluminum, and will later decide on other products, if the United States imposes a 25% tariff on European goods.

In a joint press conference in Porto with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Macron confirmed that if U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum are “confirmed,” Europeans will respond, adding that there would be reciprocal tariffs because “we must protect ourselves and defend ourselves.”

He continued, “We should not appear weak in any way in the face of these measures,” according to AFP.

Montenegro agreed, stating that “of course, Europe will have to respond to the tariffs with the same level or a similar level… It would not make sense to do otherwise.”

President Donald Trump threatened on Wednesday to impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from the European Union as tensions between Washington and its European allies continue to rise.
