Guterres’ Request Angers “Sumud”

Sudan Events – Reports

The personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, sparked anger within the “Sumud” coalition, led by Abdalla Hamdok, by confirming that the UN chief welcomed the roadmap proposed by the Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council in recent months.

Lamamra stated that the Secretary-General urged all concerned Sudanese parties to contribute their ideas to enrich the document, which he said could facilitate discussions necessary for rebuilding a united and cohesive Sudanese state.

The envoy further noted that the UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern over actions taken by the RSF and its allies in Nairobi, warning that such moves increase the risk of Sudan’s fragmentation. Lamamra emphasized that anything that widens the divide among Sudanese rather than unites them is “undesirable.”

Meanwhile, Khalid Omer Yusuf, a leading figure in the “Sumud” coalition, criticized the UN envoy, saying it was strange that he was promoting the vision of one of the warring parties at a time when the leader of that faction was amending the constitutional document to solidify military dictatorship.

He pointed out that the UN was among the first organizations to condemn the October 25 coup, which the African Union deemed an unconstitutional change of government, leading to Sudan’s suspension from the AU. However, Lamamra appears to have a completely different perspective, Yusuf argued.

He added, “Since his appointment, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy has consistently shown sympathy and bias towards the army rather than the Sudanese people. This has led to the failure of all his mediation efforts. A successful mediator is one who builds bridges with all parties, not someone who promotes the views of one faction—especially when that faction is one of the two forces currently shedding the blood of Sudanese citizens.”
