Meloni: It is extremely important to avoid the risk of Western division

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday that “it is extremely important to avoid the risk of division” within the West, upon her arrival at Downing Street for talks with her British counterpart Keir Starmer.

Meloni stated before a summit of Kyiv’s allies in London, “I think it is extremely important to avoid the risk of division within the West,” adding that “Italy and the UK can play an important role in bridging the gap,” according to AFP.

On Sunday, Starmer announced that his country, in cooperation with France, is working on a “plan to stop the fighting” between Ukraine and Russia, just hours before a summit with around 15 European leaders in London.

This summit, which will be attended by leaders of countries supporting Ukraine, aims to discuss new security guarantees in Europe amid concerns that Washington may reduce its support for its allies, a fear heightened after the altercation between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.

Starmer said, “The UK, together with France and perhaps one or two other countries, will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting, and then we will discuss this plan with the United States.”

The summit comes ahead of an extraordinary European summit on Ukraine scheduled for Thursday in Brussels.

The British government clarified that the discussions in London will focus on “strengthening Ukraine’s position today, including continued military support and increasing economic pressure on Russia.”
