Efforts to Assess Damage to Agricultural Projects

Sudan Events – Monitoring
Sudan’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Abu Bakr Al-Bushra, announced that the Supreme Committee for Reconstruction—established to assess war-related damage—held a meeting in Port Sudan to evaluate the destruction of Al-Jazira Project, as well as the Agricultural Research Corporation and Rahad Agricultural Scheme.
The minister stated that the project’s governor conducted an initial damage assessment, describing the losses as severe, affecting infrastructure, irrigation, and canals. He added that the Agricultural Research Corporation has compiled a list of stolen equipment and vehicles seized by the RSF militia, which he labeled as “oppressive.”
According to the minister, the most significant loss was the complete looting of the national gene bank for local plant varieties. Refrigeration units containing indigenous plants and seeds, crucial for agricultural research, were also stolen.
However, he noted that some seeds were recovered and remain intact. A technical committee has been formed to document the losses and set priorities for recovery efforts. The committee is expected to meet next week to finalize a comprehensive loss report and establish a plan for reconstruction.
