Lavrov: Macron’s Nuclear Remarks Are a Threat to Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron—who announced his intention to discuss placing Europe under the protection of France’s nuclear arsenal—constitute a “threat” to Russia, according to Agence France-Presse.
Lavrov stated, “Of course, this is a threat to Russia. If he considers us a threat… and says that the use of nuclear weapons is necessary and is preparing to use them against Russia, then this is undoubtedly a threat.”
On Wednesday, Macron said in a speech to the French people, broadcast on the Élysée Palace’s website: “I have decided to open a strategic discussion on protecting our allies in the European continent with our nuclear weapons… Whatever happens, the decision to use nuclear weapons will always remain in the hands of the President of the Republic.”
In a related context, Macron revealed a proposal he had presented along with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on March 2, suggesting a one-month ceasefire in Ukraine. The proposal includes halting hostilities in the air, at sea, and targeting energy infrastructure.
