Sudan Events – Reports
The United Nations Security Council has expressed deep concern over the signing of a charter to establish a parallel authority in Sudan. The Council members stated that such actions could exacerbate the ongoing conflict in Sudan, lead to the country’s fragmentation, and worsen the already dire humanitarian situation.
The Council reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, calling for an end to hostilities and a comprehensive political dialogue that would lead to an elected civilian government after the transitional period.
Security Council members welcomed the African Union and the UN Secretary-General’s call for an urgent ceasefire declaration during the month of Ramadan.
Additionally, the Council urged respect for international law and its resolutions on the arms embargo in Darfur, calling on states not to interfere in ways that could escalate the situation. It also commended the efforts of UN envoy Ramtane Lamamra in seeking a lasting peaceful solution in Sudan.
