President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit called on the people to remain calm, stressing that they would not return to war.
In a speech delivered three days after security incidents in Juba and Nasir, Kiir stated that the government would resolve the crisis for the sake of peace. He mentioned holding a meeting with opposition leader Riek Machar, who gave assurances to the parties involved. However, he noted that Machar’s forces had attacked the military barracks in Nasir.
