Canada Reaffirms Commitment to “Positive” Relations with Washington

New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that his country is determined to establish relations that are “as positive as possible” with the United States under President Donald Trump while emphasizing Ottawa’s efforts to maintain “reliable” ties with its European allies.
According to Agence France-Presse, Carney’s remarks come during a European tour after Canada’s economy and even its sovereignty faced unprecedented threats from the United States.
The former Bank of England governor, who replaced Justin Trudeau last week, chose two European powers—France and the United Kingdom—for his first official visits instead of the U.S., following Trump’s escalating rhetoric against Canada.
Speaking from Paris, his first international stop since taking office on Friday, Carney said: “I want to ensure that France and the whole of Europe work enthusiastically with Canada—a country that is the most European among non-European nations—while remaining committed to maintaining the most positive possible relations with the United States.”
