The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday condemned the looting of a supply convoy belonging to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the detention of 60 peacekeepers and other civilians near Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State.
In a statement, the Security Council said, “Members of the Security Council strongly condemn the RSF’s detention of more than 60 UN peacekeepers and the abduction of eight armed civilians on February 28, as well as the looting of a UNISFA logistical convoy consisting of eight vehicles and 280,000 liters of fuel.”
The statement clarified that the incident occurred after a routine fuel delivery to the headquarters of the Joint Border Monitoring and Verification Mechanism in Kadugli, South Kordofan.
Council members expressed deep concern over the threats to the safety and security of UNISFA peacekeepers and civilian personnel. They condemned all forms of violence against UN staff and civilians, including deliberate abduction, reiterating that attacks on peacekeepers could constitute war crimes.
They reminded all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law and called for the RSF to be held accountable.
The Council urgently called for the return of the seized UNISFA trucks and fuel and urged all parties to enable the force to carry out its mandate fully and without interference, including supporting the Joint Monitoring and Verification Mechanism.
Members praised the efforts of the acting head of mission and the UNISFA force commander in ensuring the safe return of all detainees, reaffirming their full support for the force and expressing gratitude to troop- and police-contributing countries.
