Somali Intelligence: 82 Al-Shabaab Members Killed in Airstrikes

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) announced on Friday morning that 82 members of the insurgent group Al-Shabaab, including senior leaders, were killed in airstrikes conducted by the agency in the Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.

In a statement, NISA added that 19 others were wounded in the airstrikes, which targeted the Sabiid and Aanole areas in Lower Shabelle and continued since last night.

The Somali news agency reported on Sunday that the army, in coordination with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), carried out a coordinated air operation in the Middle Shabelle region in Hirshabelle state.

The agency stated that the airstrike targeted militants attempting to regroup “after suffering heavy losses in recent clashes with the Somali army and its allies in the region.”
