The Director of the National Mine Action Center in Sudan, Major General Khalid Hamdan, revealed that 29 deaths have been recorded due to war remnants, confirming the destruction of 47,000 shells and ammunition since the center resumed operations in 2024.
Speaking to Ultra Sudan, Major General Hamdan stated that 29 individuals have been officially recorded as victims of war remnants and landmines, but the actual number could be higher due to a lack of accurate statistics.
He added, “The center has destroyed over 10,000 unexploded shells and 37,000 small-caliber ammunition.” He further explained that the center’s teams successfully cleared Karari and Omdurman localities, particularly areas such as Omdurman Market, Dnubawi, Al-Abbasiya, Al-Arda Street, and Al-Douha district, as well as parts of Umbadda locality, which were all heavily contaminated with war remnants.
He continued, “Engineering Corps teams and the center have extracted a large number of landmines in Bahri, where work is ongoing, focusing on main roads, hospitals, public facilities, police stations, and power and water stations—all of which have been cleared to facilitate the return of essential services.”
Hamdan affirmed the center’s readiness to deploy teams in Khartoum and East Nile, particularly in Ailfun, Um Dawan Ban, and Soba, areas that witnessed intense battles.
Additionally, he noted that the center has already deployed teams in Al-Jazira, Sennar, Dinder, Damazin, and Kassala to raise public awareness and remove war remnants. He also expressed readiness to send a team to El-Obeid in North Kordofan.
He stated that the center has established a hotline (60666) for citizens to report dangerous war remnants. Reports from areas with stationed teams are addressed immediately, while in remote areas, the Engineering Corps is contacted to handle the threat.
