The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, informed the German Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Heiko Nitschke, that the armed forces have no desire to remain in power or engage in political activities.
The meeting, which took place in Port Sudan on Thursday, reviewed the latest developments in the country and various current political issues. It also addressed the efforts being made by the Sudanese government to achieve peace, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need, and the ongoing attempts to hold an inclusive Sudanese dialogue and form a technocratic government to prepare the country for elections, as part of the roadmap recently announced by the government.
According to a press statement from the Sovereignty Council, Al-Burhan affirmed that “the armed forces are working to create favorable conditions for an elected civilian government to take power in the country,” stressing that the armed forces have no desire to engage in political work.
For his part, the German special envoy to the Horn of Africa indicated that his country is ready to support Sudan’s reconstruction efforts and to contribute with international partners to post-war rebuilding and recovery efforts.
The German envoy began his visit to Sudan two days ago, during which he met with several state officials and representatives of international organizations working in the humanitarian field.
