U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States will seek to intensify diplomatic efforts to end the war in Sudan, where violence has recently escalated, particularly in the capital, Khartoum.
The American secretary stated that he is “engaged” with the Sudanese issue, noting that he had discussed it in recent days with international stakeholders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Rubio made these remarks to reporters accompanying him on his return trip to the United States after a tour of the Caribbean region.
The Secretary of State stressed the importance of diplomatic solutions to the Sudanese crisis.
“We are very concerned about returning to where we were a decade ago or less,” he said.
“We don’t want to see that. That’s why we are trying to understand the situation, communicate with our partners, and consult with them on what should be done,” he added.
