The Sudanese authorities have released former Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Youssef Abdel Fattah, by judicial order due to the deterioration of their health conditions. Meanwhile, the defense team for ousted President Omar al-Bashir and his former Defense Minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein has submitted a request to the judiciary for their release under a similar decision.
A member of the defense team for the defendants in the “1989 Coup Case” told Al Jazeera Net that security authorities complied on Wednesday with a judicial order to release Saleh and Abdel Fattah due to the severity of their health conditions, following multiple medical reports recommending their treatment abroad.
According to the lawyer, who requested anonymity, Bashir and Hussein are suffering from complex health conditions, and a new request has been submitted to the judiciary for their release, supported by a medical report on their health status. He held the authorities responsible for any consequences if there was a delay in processing this request.
He explained that since last September, Saleh and Abdel Fattah, along with Bashir and his aides, had been transferred from Omdurman to Merowe in northern Sudan, where they remained under the guard of military intelligence and the police. “Despite their severe health conditions, which could be life-threatening if they do not receive treatment in medical facilities unavailable within the country.”
The lawyer stated that Abdel Fattah had left his place of detention and was admitted to Merowe Hospital for treatment, while Saleh remains at his residence in Merowe alongside Bashir.
