Emery: PSG’s Third Goal Will Motivate Aston Villa in the Second Leg

Unai Emery, head coach of English club Aston Villa, said that the late goal scored by France’s Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals—which ended with a 1-3 loss for the English side—will not affect his team’s chances of advancing.

According to the British News Agency, Aston Villa looked set to leave the French capital with just a one-goal deficit after Morgan Rogers scored for Villa, but goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead.

However, Nuno Mendes’ injury-time goal proved to be significant, especially considering that Villa had managed to contain the team that eliminated Liverpool, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez—France’s public enemy number one—making a series of crucial saves.

Emery said that Aston Villa’s mindset going into the second leg would remain unchanged, and that the result wasn’t the worst possible outcome.

The Spanish coach commented: “This loss doesn’t change much.”
