Arrangements to Activate River Transport Between Sudan and Egypt

Minister of Transport, Abubakr Abul-Qasim Abdullah, revealed ongoing arrangements to activate river transport between Aswan and Wadi Halfa via the vessels Saq Al-Ni’am and Sinai, starting mid-May, to transport passengers. Efforts are also being made to find suitable means for the return of Sudanese citizens from Egypt via Wadi Halfa and other active crossings in coordination with the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo.

The Minister met with Kassala State Deputy Governor, Omar Othman Adam, as part of his visit to the state.

He confirmed that the railway sector will be the backbone of transportation and will receive special attention in the coming phase to ensure an effective transport chain.

He noted that the focus will be on rehabilitating the eastern railway line by involving companies to modernize and reconstruct it according to global standards, using the Dakar–Port Sudan railway as a model. Additionally, studies are being conducted on a Sudan–Egypt railway link to benefit from the existing infrastructure.

The Minister also addressed the extent of the damage to the Kassala–Haiya national highway, which requires cooperation and joint efforts with the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, as well as the state authorities, to rehabilitate and repair the road. He highlighted the possibility of integrating the railway line to help reduce the load on the highway.

He announced the ministry’s support for Kassala State and its contribution to the return of displaced people to their areas through land transport and various transport chambers.
