Barcelona Open: Rune and Fils Reach Quarter-finals

Denmark’s Holger Rune, ranked 13th in the world, and France’s Arthur Fils, ranked 14th, both reached the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open (ATP 500) on Wednesday, played on clay courts.

Rune had to come from behind to beat Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 after returning to action following food poisoning that forced him to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters last week.

Baez broke Rune’s serve early in the first set and went up 2-0 before sealing the set, as Rune committed 15 unforced errors.

The Dane responded by breaking Baez three times in the second set to level the match, and repeated the feat in the decisive third set, clinching the win on his third match point.

Unlike Rune, Fils had little trouble defeating Spain’s Pedro Martinez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

The 20-year-old faced just one break point in the entire match and managed to save it successfully.
