UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi warned on Tuesday that continuing to ignore the situation in Sudan, where the war has entered its third year, will have “catastrophic consequences” for the country and the wider region.
In a statement, Grandi said: “We must do everything in our power to bring peace to Sudan. Humanitarian aid must be increased, and support for development must be strengthened. Continuing to turn a blind eye to the situation will lead to catastrophic consequences.”
He also warned Europeans of a potential influx of Sudanese refugees if adequate assistance is not provided.
