The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the risk of Sudan’s “disintegration” following the announcement by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader, Hemedti, of plans to form a parallel government in the near future.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told Agence France-Presse (AFP): “We are deeply concerned about any further escalation of the conflict in Sudan, including actions that would further fragment the country and entrench the crisis.”
Dujarric stressed that “preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity is fundamental to moving toward a lasting resolution to the crisis and ensuring long-term stability for the country and the region.”
He added, “As an international community, we must find ways to help the Sudanese people end this horrific catastrophe and establish acceptable arrangements for transition.”
Similarly, the British government condemned the RSF’s announcement of forming a rival government in Sudan, stating that it “is not the solution” to the war that has torn the country apart for two years.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said in a statement: “Unilateral announcements aimed at forming a parallel government are not the solution. On the contrary, maintaining Sudan’s territorial unity and sovereignty is essential.”
He added that “a comprehensive, civilian-led peace agreement is necessary to preserve Sudan’s unity.”
