Electricity: High Load Behind Repeated Outages in the Red Sea State

The Sudan Electricity Company stated that the repeated power outages in the Red Sea State are due to the transmission line (Atbara–Port Sudan) going out of service following an attack by the rebel militia on the Atbara substation. Additionally, the city’s reliance on the power barge as the sole source of electricity for the state, combined with the current loads exceeding available generation capacity, has contributed to the issue. Furthermore, illegal connections—known as “Jabaddat”—are causing extra load and placing additional strain on the network.

In a statement issued Friday, the company confirmed that efforts are ongoing to restore the Atbara–Port Sudan line as soon as possible. It also urged citizens to conserve electricity during this period and to remove illegal connections (“Jabaddat”) to ensure fair distribution of power supply.
