Sudanese Attorney General Fattah Tayfour reaffirmed the determination and seriousness of the judicial authorities to prevent impunity.
Speaking during his prosecution opening statement at the terrorism court in Port Sudan, presided over by Judge Al-Mamoun Al-Khawad on Sunday, he stated that bringing these defendants to trial sends a clear message to those who attempt to hide or escape justice: the sword of justice will reach them.
He explained to the court that the prosecution had presented a strong case backed by audio, visual, and written evidence, as well as eyewitness testimonies, providing proof beyond a reasonable doubt sufficient to convict the accused. He urged the court to ensure justice is served.
In his statement, Attorney General Tayfour detailed the circumstances surrounding the brutal murder of the late governor, his execution, and the desecration of his body—an act carried out as part of a chain of betrayal and treachery initiated by the militia with their attack on Merowe Airport on April 13, 2023, followed by the assault on the General Command and the assassination attempt on the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Head of the Sovereignty Council.
He pointed out that the late governor confronted the militia within his constitutional authority, inspecting citizens and public facilities. However, the accused arrested him, took him to the militia’s headquarters, executed him, dragged his body, and left it exposed for children to mutilate. Among the perpetrators were the deputy governor and the militia commander in the region.
The charges brought against the accused include criminal conspiracy, incitement, criminal agreement and assistance, waging war against the state, undermining the constitutional order, desecration of corpses, unlawful detention, and crimes against individuals.
