“Mine Action”: 60,000 Shells and Ammunition Destroyed

The Director of the National Mine Action Center in Sudan, Major General Khalid Hamdan, revealed the destruction of more than 60,000 shells and pieces of ammunition, confirming that work is ongoing in the states of Khartoum and Al Jazirah, which are heavily contaminated by war remnants.

According to Ultra Sudan, Major General Khalid Hamdan stated that the center has destroyed more than 53,000 small arms ammunition and 8,168 large shells. He added that operations are ongoing in Khartoum and Al Jazirah states, which suffer from significant contamination due to war remnants.

He confirmed that the center has recorded 40 incidents, resulting in 66 victims — including 16 fatalities and 50 injuries — caused by mines and explosive remnants of war. He noted that these figures do not represent the total number of affected individuals, due to the lack of accurate statistics.

Hamdan pointed out that the center receives between 9 and 10 reports daily from citizens in Khartoum and Al Jazirah through the hotline 60666.

He added that each report is handled immediately in areas where engineering corps and clearance teams are deployed to eliminate potential threats.

Hamdan stated that teams have been deployed in Al Jazirah, Sennar, Dinder, Damazin, and Al-Obeid to raise public awareness and remove war remnants.

He urged returning residents not to touch, move, tamper with, or attempt to dismantle any suspicious or foreign object. Instead, they should secure the area and report it immediately to the relevant authorities.
