Vatican: Pope Francis Has Passed Away

The Vatican announced in a recorded statement on Monday the death of Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church, marking the end of a turbulent era generally characterized by division and tension in his pursuit to reform the ancient institution.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 after suffering from various illnesses during his 12-year papacy.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell said on Vatican TV, “Dear brothers and sisters, with great sadness and sorrow, I announce the death of His Holiness Pope Francis.”
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as Pope on March 13, 2013, a decision that surprised many observers of the Church who viewed the Argentine cleric, known for his concern for the poor, as an outsider.
His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday during mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, where he appeared from the balcony and later toured the square in his vehicle as thousands of faithful gathered to celebrate the holiday.
Pope Francis had been weakened by pneumonia, which led to a hospital stay of over a month. One of his aides read his message on his behalf, in which he generally reviewed global conflicts.
