Upcoming Visit by World Bank Delegation to Sudan

Sudan’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Gibril Ibrahim, discussed several vital issues related to the current situation in Sudan and prospects for future cooperation with Ndiame Diop, Vice President of the World Bank, on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington.

Dr. Ibrahim reviewed the developments in Sudan, particularly following the liberation of the capital, Khartoum, highlighting the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the city of El Fasher, which remains under siege and continuous shelling by militias, leading to deteriorating living conditions and an increased need for urgent humanitarian interventions.

The minister also elaborated on the current economic situation, explaining that the country is moving towards a phase of gradual improvement, with the beginning of displaced persons’ return to their original areas and the resumption of commercial activities, which are expected to stimulate economic circulation and enhance opportunities for comprehensive recovery.

In terms of strategic planning, Dr. Gibril presented the outlook for Sudan’s economy over the next five years, noting the completion of the final report by the National Reconstruction Committee. He confirmed that the report would be shared with international partner institutions, allowing Sudan to benefit from reconstruction experiences drawn from similar studies conducted in Gaza, Syria, and Libya, thus enhancing the effectiveness of future rebuilding efforts.

In the same context, both sides discussed the best ways the World Bank could contribute to supporting damage assessment efforts, a key step towards setting scientifically grounded recovery and sustainable development plans.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to welcome an initial technical delegation from the World Bank to Sudan in June, paving the way for expanded technical and financial cooperation. A forthcoming visit by the World Bank Vice President to Sudan is also anticipated, which would further strengthen the strategic partnership and advance development and reconstruction efforts.

Dr. Gibril Ibrahim reaffirmed Sudan’s full commitment to working jointly with international partners to support economic recovery and humanitarian response efforts, aiming to fulfill the Sudanese people’s aspirations for a safer and more prosperous future.
