UNFPA Expresses Solidarity with Sudan and Pledges Increased Support
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has expressed its solidarity with the Sudanese people and reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing Sudan despite ongoing global conflicts. The organization announced plans to increase support across various sectors, particularly in Gedaref State, which is hosting a large number of displaced persons and refugees due to the war.
During a meeting today with Mr. Abdel Azim El-Gamous, Acting Governor of Gedaref, UNFPA’s Global Director of Emergency Response, Ms. Shoko Lemi, emphasized the importance of immediate humanitarian response for displaced individuals, refugees, and host communities. She also called on other organizations to direct their attention toward the challenges facing Sudan.
Ms. Lemi encouraged the Gedaref government to prepare a memorandum outlining priority intervention projects, with a focus on UNFPA’s core programs—particularly maternal and child health, and gender-based violence. She also designated the Acting Governor as an ambassador for the UNFPA to help deliver the fund’s message to targeted communities in the state.
In turn, Mr. El-Gamous praised UNFPA’s ongoing contributions to the state, noting that Gedaref is currently hosting more than three million displaced people, as well as Ethiopian refugees, which has severely strained health, education, and water services. He called for urgent intervention to address service needs.
