UN-Arab Agreement to Intensify Efforts to Stop the War in Sudan

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, emphasized the need to intensify international and regional efforts to end the war in Sudan and to deliver humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

During his meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the Arab League’s support for the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations for security, peace, and sustainable development.

The official spokesperson for the Arab League Secretary-General, Ambassador Gamal Roshdy, stated that Aboul Gheit reiterated the League’s core principles regarding the crisis in Sudan, foremost among them the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan, as well as the necessity of preserving Sudan’s national institutions.

The Secretary-General also stressed the importance of preventing any foreign interference in Sudanese affairs and of launching a comprehensive political process led by the Sudanese themselves—one that respects Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial unity and ensures the participation of all segments of Sudanese society.

The UN envoy briefed the Arab League Secretary-General on the UN’s work plan for the coming period, listing the challenges facing diplomatic efforts, according to the Arab League spokesperson.

They also discussed the latest developments and the envoy’s perspective in light of the military situation on the ground in Sudan, particularly following the Sudanese Armed Forces’ recapture of the capital, Khartoum.
