The General Coordination of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in Darfur announced the arrival of the first batch of relief trucks to the town of Tawila, west of El Fasher, and the start of aid distribution to newly displaced persons fleeing from Zamzam camp.
The official spokesperson for the Coordination, Adam Regal, told “Darfur24” that the quantities delivered are sufficient for only about 22,000 displaced persons, while more trucks are expected to arrive later this week.
He explained that the distributed relief items included sorghum, cooking oil, salt, and biscuits, and that the distribution was overseen by the World Food Programme (WFP) in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society.
For his part, Omda Abdullah Saleh Ishaq, one of the community leaders among the displaced, stated that the distribution of aid is a positive step despite its limited scale. He emphasized the urgent need for food, drinking water, shelter, and healthcare services, especially given the large number of displaced people gathered between Tawila Al-Omda and the Dali area.
Ishaq criticized what he described as the international community’s silence in the face of the suffering of the displaced, pointing out that each person receives only about two kilograms of sorghum—a quantity insufficient amid worsening humanitarian conditions. He added that thousands of displaced individuals are still sleeping in the open, awaiting shelter materials such as plastic sheets, blankets, and mats, particularly with the rainy season approaching.
