Member of the Sovereignty Council and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Shams al-Din al-Kabbashi, visited the site of the fire that broke out at the Sudanese Oil Corporation’s depots in Port Sudan. He was accompanied by the Minister of Energy and Oil, Dr. Mohieldin Mohamed Naim, and Red Sea State Governor, General Mustafa Mohamed Nour, to inspect the firefighting efforts.
The Minister of Energy and Oil revealed that the main tank containing the strategic oil reserve at the central depot in Port Sudan was set ablaze, along with four other main tanks. The fire was caused by drone strikes launched by the rebel militia early Monday. He noted that these random attacks targeted strategic facilities, dealing a blow to the Sudanese people and their resources.
In press remarks, Minister Naim described the attacks as a serious threat and said that firefighting equipment from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is expected to arrive soon, including firefighting aircraft within the coming hours. He added that precautionary measures and necessary responses will be implemented once the fire is extinguished to ensure the return to normal life.
For his part, Red Sea State Governor General Mustafa Mohamed Nour stated that the Civil Defense is making great efforts to put out the fire. He reassured citizens that the fuel supply will not be affected by these attacks, pointing out that there are large reserves of petroleum products in other regions to meet public needs.
In the same context, Brigadier General Abdullah Abdel-Safi Faraj, Deputy Director of Civil Defense in Red Sea State, stated that efforts are ongoing to extinguish the fire in the main tanks of the strategic oil depots. He confirmed that the fire is currently confined to four tanks and that the rest of the facilities remain unaffected and under full control, thanks to the continuous efforts of Civil Defense units, the Sea Ports Authority, Port Sudan Airport Management, and the state’s Civil Defense Department.
He added that Civil Defense teams are operating at full capacity to prevent the fire from spreading, affirming that the other depots remain secure due to the intense efforts on the ground.
