FAO: Sudanese Leather Is Globally Desired

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

Mohamed Al-Zain Saeed, Technical Secretariat Officer for Food Security at the FAO in Sennar, stated that livestock ranks second only to gold in terms of economic importance, highlighting its economic, social, and environmental role.

According to the Sudan News Agency, he noted that 26 million people in the country are directly or indirectly involved in the livestock sector.

He revealed that livestock contributes 30% to Sudan’s GDP and accounts for 25% of total exports. He stressed that the livestock sector does not require foundational investments to become profitable or viable, but rather simple measures that can lead to economic gains for Sudan and contribute to national security and stability.

The FAO official emphasized that livestock hides designated for export are highly sought after globally due to their durability and strength. He affirmed that hides are an important economic resource that must be prioritized in order to mobilize resources and support the armed forces.
