First Passenger Train Departs from Atbara to Khartoum on Tuesday

The Governor of River Nile State, Dr. Mohamed Al-Badawi Abdel-Majid Abu Qurun, affirmed that the railway represents the cornerstone of renaissance, development, and progress.

This came during his meeting in Al-Damer with a delegation of Sudan Railways Corporation leaders, headed by Chief Engineer and Consultant Musa Al-Qawm Al-Jahdi, the General Director of the Corporation.

The governor praised the significant role of the railway and its economic and social impact.

He expressed his happiness at the resumption of railway operations and the launch of the first passenger train and voluntary return from Atbara to Khartoum next Tuesday, after a suspension of more than two years.

The governor emphasized the need to continue efforts to operate and reopen the Atbara–Halfa railway line due to its connection to the commercial crossing between Sudan and the Arab Republic of Egypt, which would support the movement of exports and imports between the two countries. He also confirmed his participation in the farewell ceremony of the Atbara–Khartoum train next Tuesday.

He stated that the operation of the Atbara–Khartoum train sends a strong message to the world that the country’s progress will not stop regardless of external challenges, and it reassures that Sudan is safe, stable, and moving forward.

For his part, the General Director of Sudan Railways, Engineer and Consultant Musa Al-Qawm Al-Jahdi, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the government of River Nile State, led by the governor, for the substantial support extended to the railways during the current difficult circumstances facing the country.

He stated that the Corporation is strongly moving forward with its plan to restore the railway to its former status, and that the Atbara–Khartoum train for voluntary return is part of an initiative led by Dr. Hassan Bargo to facilitate the return of displaced persons to their homes in Khartoum.

He added that the train’s farewell celebration will be attended by the governor, the Minister of Transport, and senior leaders from the railway corporation and the state, and that the launch of the Atbara–Halfa train is expected soon.
