Irrigation of Summer and Winter Crops in the Gezira Scheme
On Sunday, the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Dhu Al-Bait Abdelrahman, inaugurated the release of irrigation water into the main canals of the Gezira Scheme at the Sennar Dam. The event was attended by Major General (Engineer) Al-Zubair Hassan, Governor of Sennar, and Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair, Governor of Gezira. The minister affirmed the availability of water for irrigating both the summer and winter cropping seasons.
He renewed his ministry’s commitment to providing water for farmers along the Nile strip and called on the joint committee between the Ministry of Irrigation and the Gezira Scheme to define cultivation areas and target acreages so that water can be allocated accordingly. He also emphasized the importance of linking the minor irrigation network to the agricultural zones.
For his part, the Governor of Sennar expressed his satisfaction with the state of security and stability in Gezira and Sennar. He stated that the Gezira Scheme is not merely a farming area, but a symbol of struggle, national sovereignty, food security, prosperity, development, and the revitalization of the national economy. He added that the return of the Gezira Scheme marks a revival of the economy and a step toward national recovery.
He further noted that the inauguration of water flow symbolizes security and stability, urging everyone to work together in unity to build the nation and prioritize agriculture.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Gezira affirmed his government’s keen interest in the Gezira Scheme, considering it the engine of the national economy and a lifeline for the Sudanese state.
Engineer Mufaddal Al-Tayeb, General Director of Irrigation Operations, announced that 90% of the repairs to the main canals damaged by the rebel militias have been completed. He confirmed that embankments have been reinforced, silt islands and weeds have been removed, and pipes in the upper irrigation network have been cleaned. He called on farming sectors to preserve the water and irrigation system.
Engineer Mohamed Al-Haj Sand, Director of the Sennar Dam, praised the dedication of the governors of Gezira and Sennar to development and agriculture. He also thanked the Minister of Irrigation for supporting the maintenance of equipment and the deployment of security forces to protect service facilities.
