United Nations: Hundreds of Thousands of Lives at Risk in Kordofan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan emphasized on Monday that the lack of humanitarian access to Kordofan is putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk.

In a statement, OCHA said, “Without urgent, safe, and sustained humanitarian access, the lives of hundreds of thousands in the Kordofan region remain at risk.”

The statement noted that fighting in Kordofan has led to large-scale displacement and cut off humanitarian aid routes. Intense shelling in recent weeks has worsened the humanitarian crisis, leaving thousands of civilians trapped without food, water, or medical care.

OCHA explained that the states of North, West, and South Kordofan form vital corridors for delivering aid to Darfur, while needs are also increasing within Kordofan itself, with some areas facing the risk of famine.

The office stressed that insecurity, shifting frontlines, and long distances from major logistical hubs like Port Sudan and the Adré border crossing are severely hindering humanitarian operations.

OCHA reported that the fighting in Kordofan has disrupted key aid routes, particularly those linking El-Obeid to An-Nuhud and Al-Khuwei in West Kordofan, as well as Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan.

It also noted that a convoy of seven trucks carrying therapeutic food, malaria and tuberculosis medicines, and chlorine tablets is currently awaiting clearance to travel to Kadugli.

The office warned that opportunities to reach vulnerable communities are rapidly diminishing, especially with the onset of the rainy season in June and the potential deterioration of access to the Nuba Mountains.
