After Militia Takeover: Looting of Triangle Market

The large Triangle Market in the border area with Libya and Egypt has been subjected to widespread looting, according to eyewitnesses.

This comes after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with the participation of Haftar’s forces, took control of the border Triangle area.

Eyewitness Khidr Al-Hamri told Darfur24 that thousands of miners are at risk of extreme thirst and hunger due to the market closure and the shortage of drinking water, which is usually transported from distant locations. He also noted the halt of water imports from Libya due to border closure.

He pointed out that the price of a bottle of water has risen to 3,000 Sudanese pounds, while a jerry can of salty water now costs 2,000 pounds — and both are difficult to obtain within the Triangle area.

He added that RSF forces have arrested a number of civilians.

Meanwhile, a local official in the Martyr Ismail Bilal administrative unit, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told Darfur24 that authorities had evacuated around 200 families to the city of Al-Khanaq, along with several traders, police personnel, and civil service employees.

He added that thousands of miners are spread across more than 11 mining sites around the Triangle and are expected to face a severe water crisis, as water is usually transported from a site nearly 70 kilometers away.
