Sudan participated in the 59th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva by delivering a statement on the special report of the Special Rapporteur on Genocide.
Yasser Ahmed, Head of the Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Department at the Ministry of Justice and General Counsel of the National Human Rights Mechanism, affirmed Sudan’s commitment to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which Sudan joined in 2003 without reservations.
Yasser noted that this convention entails peremptory norms under international law, and Sudan believes that reservations to Article (9) of the convention hinder its implementation and the achievement of its objectives. He added, “The intense, selective, and systematic attacks carried out by the terrorist RSF militia against ethnic groups in Darfur and other areas—accompanied by hate speech and direct public incitement—are clear and sufficient evidence of the complete destruction of those communities.”
He continued: “We particularly point to the systematic targeting of the Masalit communities in the city of El Geneina and Ardamata, as well as similar events in other areas, including Wad Al-Noura village in Al-Jazira State and others.”
Yasser emphasized that the provision of military and logistical support to the terrorist militia, known for its criminal behavior, enables it to commit atrocities that amount to genocide—implicating the supporting state (referring to the United Arab Emirates) in criminal complicity in this crime. He called on the international community, through the Human Rights Council, to take a firm stance. He also urged all countries supporting the terrorist militia to immediately cease all forms of assistance and called for joint efforts to end the suffering of the communities subjected to genocide, particularly the Masalit, to uphold victims’ rights, and to support the Sudanese people during this critical time.
