Industry Ministry Takes Measures to Ensure Continued Flour Supply

The Ministry of Industry has implemented a set of measures and procedures to ensure the continued operation of flour mills and the availability of flour.

This came during an extended meeting held by Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry, Mahasen Ali Yaqoub, with flour production companies, in the presence of the Undersecretary of Federal Governance, Moaz Abdullah, the Director of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO), Rahba Saeed, and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Mohamed Othman.

Mahasen Ali Yaqoub commended the flour production companies for their significant role in ensuring the availability of this essential commodity. She noted that the companies successfully resumed production and filled the gap after all mills in conflict-affected states were shut down in the early months of the war, confirming that all mills in Khartoum and Al-Jazirah states have returned to operation.

She emphasized the need to standardize fee collection via a single receipt from a one-stop service window and stressed the prohibition of imposing taxes or fees on inter-state trade, in accordance with the Federal Governance Law, along with a comprehensive review of all fees levied on national highways.

The meeting also resulted in an agreement to facilitate mill access to financing from banks, while maintaining the requirement of obtaining Central Bank approval for wheat import financing to ensure the availability of necessary resources. Additionally, flour companies agreed to cover production shortfalls through imports when needed.

Rahba Saeed confirmed the commitment of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization to enforce wheat quality standards strictly and promised to address any obstacles facing mills. She also announced a review of all highway-imposed fees.

An agreement was reached to hold a meeting between the SSMO and mill representatives to discuss compliance and international inspection certifications.
