Reviewing Legislation to Curb Gold Smuggling

Minister of Minerals, Nour Al-Daim Taha, acknowledged that gold smuggling poses a significant challenge to the economy. He explained that the ministry, in cooperation with relevant authorities, is reviewing legislation to reduce smuggling and maximize revenues. He called for the use of modern technologies at all stages of the mining process to enhance the optimal utilization of resources.

During his visit on Tuesday to the headquarters of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company in Port Sudan, aimed at assessing performance and identifying the challenges facing the company as the ministry’s regulatory and supervisory arm, the minister stressed that the mining sector faces major challenges, particularly environmental issues. He pointed out that the ministry is working with the state and miners to address these challenges and improve the work environment to increase production and productivity. He emphasized the need to organize traditional mining so it becomes a regulated sector that contributes to the national economy.

For his part, the Director-General of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Mohamed Tahir Omar, said the company has successfully absorbed the shock experienced by the sector due to the exceptional circumstances the country is going through. It has worked to create a work environment that aligns with the current phase. He added that the Minerals Towers in Khartoum are now ready in terms of infrastructure and technical services to host departments and offices and organize administrative and technical work in a modern manner.

The Director-General revealed that the company has waived some mandated fees as part of efforts to reduce smuggling and ease the burden on traditional miners. He affirmed the existence of a comprehensive vision to address challenges, maximize production, and improve the operational environment. He noted that the company’s plans include updating geological data, expanding field monitoring coverage, and strengthening coordination with states to enforce state authority and implement technical and financial policies.

He also stated that the relationship with partners in the states and local communities is based on cooperation and mutual respect, affirming the company’s commitment to transparency and the integration of roles to develop the mining sector as a strategic national resource.
