The President of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Tuesday with the African Union Representative to Sudan, Mohamed Belaiche, in the presence of Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Omar Siddiq, and Acting Director of the African Affairs Department, Ambassador Ahmed Youssef.

In a press statement, Mohamed Belaiche said he conveyed to the Sovereign Council President the greetings of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Moussa Faki Mahamat, affirming his support for and interest in the unity and stability of Sudan. He added that his visit to Sudan comes within the framework of exploring ways to achieve peace, security, and stability in the country. He noted that the meeting was fruitful, characterized by transparency and frankness, and addressed the overall developments in Sudan.

Belaiche expressed his hope that Sudan would become a model for crisis resolution in Africa, pointing out that the formation of an independent civilian government comprised of national experts is an important step to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people, improve services, and begin the process of gradual reconstruction and rehabilitation to enable the return of displaced persons and refugees to their homes.

The African Union Representative stated: “It is commendable that the armed forces continue to defeat the rebellion and restore stability throughout Sudan,” emphasizing the importance of pursuing dialogue to resolve disputes and overcome the bitterness of the past, in accordance with the agreement signed in Jeddah on May 11, 2023, which provides a foundation for ending the war and launching a serious national dialogue among Sudanese.
