Petroleum Reference Laboratory to Open by Year-End

On Monday, Minister of Energy, Consultant Engineer Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim, conducted a field tour of ministry facilities in Port Sudan, including the new petroleum laboratory currently under construction, which is expected to be inaugurated by the end of this year. The facility is set to become one of the largest petroleum laboratories in Africa.

The minister also visited the dedicated fuel distribution office serving Sudan’s various states and monitored the movement of petroleum tankers via the operations room, in line with the scheduled fuel supply plan.

He was accompanied by the ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Mohieldin Naim Mohamed Saeed, who provided a detailed briefing on the progress of work at these facilities as part of the physical handover process. The minister noted that on-site handovers are expected to continue for a week until fully completed.

The minister praised the initiative and its significance for Sudan’s oil sector and the country as a whole, as well as its role in serving the wider region, particularly landlocked states.

For his part, Dr. Mohieldin Naim said the laboratory will test crude oil and all petroleum derivatives in accordance with global quality and specification standards.

Project Director and Head of the Crude Oil and Fuels Department, Dr. Waleed Saleh Ibrahim, explained that the laboratory was designed with advanced capabilities to ensure quality control of crude oil and all petroleum derivatives, including all types of aviation fuel, gasoline, diesel, furnace oil, cooking gas, lubricants, greases, water testing, measurement, and calibration. He stressed that every product will adhere to an international standard.

He added that the three-story laboratory building, constructed to global specifications, houses a range of equipment and devices, with all measures taken to ensure that the internal and external environments are not affected by the laboratory’s operations.
