UN Calls for Investigation into Attack on Darfur Aid Convoy

The UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan, Luca Renda, called for an immediate and independent investigation into an attack on a World Food Program aid convoy in Darfur on Wednesday.

A drone targeted the 16-truck convoy in Melit, North Darfur, destroying three trucks after they caught fire, although the drivers survived. The convoy had arrived from the WFP logistics base in Tina, Chad, on August 16 to deliver aid to Melit and surrounding areas. The attack occurred while unloading trucks at a partner’s warehouse.

Renda urged, “An immediate and independent investigation must be conducted and those responsible held accountable.” He condemned the attack on aid workers, humanitarian resources, and property, noting that this incident is part of a series of unacceptable attacks in recent months depriving those in critical need of life-saving food aid.

The statement emphasized that unimpeded access to the most vulnerable families across Darfur and Sudan is crucial, and humanitarian workers and resources must never be targeted.
