Former Industrial Chamber Official Sends Urgent Letter to the Prime Minister

Sudan Events – by Rehab Abdullah
Former Secretary-General of the Sudanese Industrial Chambers, Abdulrahman Abbas, has sent an urgent letter to Prime Minister Kamel Idris, warning of a looming collapse of the Sudanese pound and offering proposals to avert the crisis.
Speaking to Al-Ahdath, Abbas urged the Prime Minister to work with relevant authorities to boost exports beyond import levels to ensure a steady flow of foreign currency. He also called for import restrictions on non-essential goods and luxury items, and emphasized reliance on domestic agricultural and industrial production to achieve self-sufficiency and strengthen local industries.
He stressed the need for decisive policy action backed by strong political will to implement these reforms, which he said would revive the Sudanese economy and enhance the value of the national currency.
Abbas warned that the pound’s depreciation and rising production costs are exacerbating the burden on citizens.
During the first half of 2025, Sudan’s exports totaled $1.35 billion, while imports reached $2.54 billion, compared with $1.7 billion in exports and $2.2 billion in imports during the same period in 2024. Both figures remain significantly lower than pre-war levels—$2.93 billion in exports and $4.99 billion in imports in the first half of 2022.
The trade deficit in the first half of 2025 reached $1.29 billion, up from $489 million in 2024.
